Workshop with ponydance’s Leonie McDonagh//13th April 2019

Galway Dance Project are delighted to welcome ponydance’s Leonie McDonagh back home to her native Galway, for a three hour workshop on Saturday 13th April, from 10m-1pm in St Nicholas’ School, Waterside.

In this workshop Leonie will be exploring ways of using dance vocabulary and movement as a substrate for comedy and looking at ways of ‘finding the funny’.  Starting with a warm up then do some tasks that explore ways of using movement vocabulary as a conduit or way of expressing humour.   Referencing pop culture and ‘common knowledge’ to create material.. This workshop will also have a look at some basic clown exercises to build performance skills.

ponydance are champions of comedy dance theatre. Based in Belfast, pomydance have performed at the Dublin Fringe, Eargail Arts Festival, in the Aviva Stadium and internationally in New York, London, New Zealand and lots more.

This workshop is suitable for all kinds of movers and performers.

BIOGRAPHY 

Leonie is founding member and director of ponydance, with a focus on marrying comedy and dance theatre, they have toured internationally and won several awards. In 2014 she was choreographer in residence at the American Dance Festival and was associate artist at the MAC, Belfast.

Leonie studied dance at Middlesex University, Sallynoggin College and London Contemporary Dance School, she has trained with clown masters; Ira Seidenstein, Joe Deiffenbacher, Fraser Hooper and Phillipe Gaullier. She has been granted several bursaries in professional development from Arts Council Ireland and Northern Ireland. In 2016 she was commissioned by Belfast International Festival to make her first solo show, which was supported by Belfast City Council and presented at Holland Dance Festival.

With ponydance, she has produced over five full scale productions and numerous works in progress, short films and music videos. She produces and hosts their annual Christmas show ‘Pony Panto’ that provides a platform for performers and an alternative Christmas show for audiences. Leonie works as a facilitator for community projects in dance, movement and as a freelance choreographer and performer. She lives in Belfast with her son Tóbín.
