Swing Jam

SJ LogoSwing Jam was founded by Norma Owens in 2011 to rekindle the enjoyment of swing era dances in the city of Galway and beyond. Swing Jam instructors travel the globe in order to bring the most updated techniques to this century-old art form, and rank among the highest-achieving dancers in Ireland, regularly competing successfully at international dance competitions. More importantly, with a fun-loving spirit and a background in education, our focus is always on making the dances that we love accessible to all. We at Swing Jam love what we do and we really enjoy sharing it with others. We are privileged to have been invited to teach dancing and to DJ at dance events all over Ireland, as well as Canada and the USA. So come along and let us put a swing in your step!

If you would like to book us for dance classes or workshops, or to avail of our specialist swing music DJ service, we would love to hear from you. For enquiries, please use the contact form and you will receive a response within 24 hours … unless we’re attending a dance event, in which case you will hear from us as soon thereafter as possible.

Beginners Welcome
We always look forward to meeting new people!

Also, do be sure to check out our Facebook page for week-to-week updates.

Please note that it is not necessary to register in advance for classes – you may also just come along on the first night of the course and join in the fun!

BALBOA – QUICKLY
This Balboa course is not about dancing fast (although it will help you to do so if you wish!). Rather, it is an introductory course designed to move quickly for people who already have prior dance experience or who feel confident progressing at quicker pace than our usual beginner classes. This course is ideally suited to those who are already familiar with the principles of a lead-follow social dance and who only require to know some specifics about the fundamentals of Balboa movement and figures.

This course is perfect for those who have little or no prior experience of Balboa, but who are interesting in registering for our upcoming international Balboa event in Galway – THE SCOOT 2015.

Classes on this course are progressive (not drop-in). However you need not miss out entirely if you cannot make it to the first class as it is possible to join the course at the second class.

Please scroll down for important footwear advice.

If you are unfamiliar with balboa dancing, we have some great inspirational videos posted in our Gallery.

SLOW BALBOA
Now this course really is all about dancing slow! Tired of having to sit out the slow tunes at a dance? Slow Balboa is a beautifully elegant variation of Balboa that will enable you to dance to those sweet slow swing songs. This course will suit anybody, whether absolute beginner or those with experience, and will cover the basics of both Laminu as well as Dean Raftery’s style of Slow Balboa.

Classes on this course are progressive (not drop-in). However you need not miss out entirely if you cannot make it to the first class as it is possible to join the course at the second class.
